Beckmann, a soldier who has just returned from Russia to a devastated Germany. Having lost everything he cherished in life, he finds himself completely displaced. Unable to adopt the values of others or live by his own, he addresses suicide as a course of action but is rejected by the river into which he plunges. As in a fever he wanders the streets of a lost yesterday, tortured by gruesome memories and stuck in the middle between life and death, past and present, dream and reality. Delirious and weakened by hunger and cold, Beckmann’s despair deepens through a scenic concert of encounters in which a spent life passes before him.
