YOU ARE INVITED TO
THE DIRECTORS’ WORKSHOP - PART ONE
One for the Road – Harold Pinter
(1984)
This play was written after Pinter had met two “extremely
attractive and intelligent young Turkish women” at a party,
who seemed casually indifferent to the use of torture in their country.
The play follows Nicolas, a self-proclaimed “civilised man”
and head of the secret police in a country that could be anywhere
in the world as he interrogates his most recent victims of torture,
Victor, a dissident intellectual, his wife Gila, and their son,
Nicky.
A Time for Farewells – Damian Trasler
(2003)
As it alternates between present and past, this touching play spotlights
some of the events — some good, some bad — in a married
couple’s life as they chat while getting ready to go out for
the last time together. But why celebrate a separation? The end
of the play explains all!
The Proposal – Anton Chekhov (1889)
Ivan wants to marry Natalyia. Natalyia wants to marry Ivan. And
Natalyia’s father Choobukov wants them both to be married.
Just how difficult could it be for Ivan to make a marriage proposal...?

AUDITIONS, AUDITIONS!
Thanks to the many of you who turned up for the auditions on January
13th. It was a great turnout and the only pity was that there weren’t
parts for so many very talented people. But there’s another
chance! And another!!
Lisbon Players has decided to switch the second group of Directors’
Workshop Productions and Shakespeare’s Richard II so the next
auditions will be on SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24th at 3pm. The three directors
will be looking for actors of various ages and genders for the three
plays which will be presented on April 4, 5, 11 and 12. These are
Tone Clusters by Joyce Carol Oates, Recklessness by Eugene O’Neill
and The Bear by Chekhov.
Auditions for Richard II will be on SUNDAY, APRIL 6th at 3pm for
a May/June production.
SAVE THE LISBON PLAYERS
As most of you will now be aware the Lisbon Players, in its 60th
year, is faced with a fight for its continued existence. The British
Government, as Trustees for the site on which the theatre stands,
wants to sell the site for development. The building is in need
of essential modifications to bring it up to the required standards
for public performance. We are reluctant to spend this money with
no assurance about our future.
We are, however, determined that these challenges should not mean
the end of the Lisbon Players. As we have a good legal case for
staying put we are fighting for one of the following two options.
First, that we stay in Estrela Hall with the long-promised legal
ownership of the building that will enable us to do necessary work
to bring the building up to scratch. Or second, that we be provided
with an alternative theatre building in Lisbon which is acceptable
to us.
What can you do?
Support our productions, give donations, follow our story, offer
legal or logistical help, storage space, publicity, theatre venues
……..
